We come to issue 50 of the Learning Management in Focus newsletter. Launched in November 2015, the publication was created with the aim of contributing to debates on the Brazilian educational context and putting on the agenda relevant topics for the discussion of public policies. These were politically troubled times in the country, and there was no way for education to pass unscathed to the scenario of growing polarization and constant exchanges of power. The bulletin did not fail to dialogue with this context, but tried to be faithful to its title, keeping the focus on the most relevant issues for learning, paying special attention to the role of the Management.

 Throughout these 49 editions, we sought to bring content that contributed to reflection and management practices for learning results, with reduced inequality, and based on evidence.

 Focus On Management

The debut bulletin, “What does a good principal do to improve student performance?” , announced the central focus of the publication, highlighting the importance of the manager to build trusting relationships with teachers and the development of actions to improve teaching practice.

This first text also already had a striking feature of the publication: the constant search for scientific studies to support the main arguments. When bringing these contents, the objective was always to bring the best possible academic evidence, national or international, closer to the reality of the Brazilian manager. References to these researches always appear in the “To Know More” section, designed with the objective of contributing to the expansion of managers’ repertoire.

 The newsletter always tried to present a topic that was of interest to managers, adding to academic studies, whenever possible, concrete reports of successful strategies in public schools in the country. The most read edition ( number 28 ), for example, deals with one of the biggest challenges of high school – the fight against dropout – and reports ways found by some principals and their teams to face the problem.

The bulletin gained space in the media by presenting unprecedented data from the tabulation of the directors’ responses to the Saeb questionnaire on the main actions taken to reduce dropout, fulfilling its mission of putting on the agenda topics relevant to the educational debate.

 Also among the most read is issue 32 , which addresses the problem of failure – and is closely linked to that of evasion. In this issue, we highlight studies that reinforce the negative effect of failure on learning and its role in perpetuating inequalities.

The Importance Of A culture Of High Expectations For Students

 The importance of a culture of high expectations for students ( 6 ), the pedagogical use of external assessments ( 8 ), the search for evidence to support management ( 17) are some of the editions that addressed management-related topics. By bringing these and other topics.

Always focusing on what managers can do, the bulletin sought to be careful to also analyze the educational context, considering that there are actions that can be led by directors and their teams, and others that depend on the action of other instances, external to the schools. The principle that guided this choice was to value the action potential of managers at the school level, while also drawing attention to the responsibility of other bodies in the process of improving the quality of education.

 In the case of the edition on evening High School ( n.10 ), also widely accessed, we approached the issue of the low rates of permanence and learning Management of these students from a broader perspective, emphasizing the importance of thinking about specific policies for this shift. .

 Valuing Diversity

The search for better student learning outcomes is an essential function of the school. However, this objective cannot be separated from other fundamental issues for the full training of young people. Therefore, the appreciation of diversity and the fight against inequalities in the school space must also be at the center of the concern of managers and formulators of educational public policies. We believe that the search for equity should be a guiding principle of management and, for this reason, issues related to these themes appear from different perspectives in the Learning Management in Focus issues.

 The editions “School silence in relation to sexual diversity harms everyone” ( n.11 ) and “Why encourage religious tolerance in the school environment” ( n.33 )) total the second and third highest volume of views. These are important topics (sexual orientation and religion) to be considered in management, as they are among the main reasons for provocation by colleagues.

According to the National School Health Survey 2015, published in 2016 by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) . Training citizens who value diversity, combat prejudice of any kind, and who know how to resolve conflicts through constructive dialogue are, in themselves, fundamental objectives of the educational system. Often, however, the bulletin recalled that these dimensions are also related to young people’s learning and permanence in school.

 Racial inequality was also addressed Management in more than one bulletin. Number 30 , which recorded the fourth highest volume of hits, presents studies that found evidence in assessments that racial inequality is also constructed from the classroom, and provides examples of how some managers faced the issue in practice.

Learning in Focus

The topic was also on the agenda of edition 2 of Learning in Focus. The text highlights that between 2005 and 2014 the percentage of young blacks in high school more than doubled, but was still at a level 14 points lower than the index for white young people.

The attention to this theme in the bulletin is consistent with Instituto Unibanco’s performance in supporting projects that aim to contribute to the development Management and implementation of inspiring school management practices that seek to increase the educational results of young black men and women in the public high school network.
